The printer cartridge recycling (PCR) scheme was founded in February 1998 after Mark Mc Nichol (The PCR Scheme founder) saw a "please recycle your old cartridge" envelope within a new printer cartridge package. This looked to be a very good idea and so he contacted the telephone number on the envelope to get some more detailed information.

The initial idea was to collect the empty printer cartridges just within his current school, and for the sole benefit of the school. As it developed it was suggested that the scheme should look to expand and donate the money raised to charity, instead of computer equipment currently obtained for the use of the school. The recycling company at the time (who is still involved in the scheme) agreed to start giving us cash per cartridge instead of computer hardware.

Within a few weeks of the The PCR Scheme's launch we had a significant boost when a major printed circuit board manufacturer agreed to save all their cartridges for us. A month or so later two national PC store's in the area also agreed to collect for us, this time by placing collection bins on the shop floor for their customers to use.

From that day on The PCR Scheme grew from strength to strength, to its current position of having many collection companies all pouring their cartridges into the scheme for recycling.

Sadly our two national PC stores have since decided they would rather collect cartridges solely for their own benefit, and therefore we would be extremely pleased to hear from any store or company who would allow us to place a collection bin in their shop or office. On February the 14th 2001 The PCR is 3 years old and to help commemorate this a brand new scheme has been launched. This is my means of Mobile Phone Recycling. Everyone is able to take part in this by donating any old mobiles they have to the scheme. Each phone could bring in £20 to help UK Children’s Charities.

The PCR Scheme is grateful to the following organisations for their continued support.
